EPLAN Properties: Basics

There are certain properties assigned to every object in EPLAN. Objects are divided into different object classes, e.g. "Projects", "Forms", "Symbols", "Functions", "Part references", etc. The properties are identified by property numbers (IDs); the same number may occur for multiple object classes. For instance, the property "Function definition description" is assigned the number <20117> in object classes "Functions", "Symbols", and "Connections".

The following information is displayed in the overview of the EPLAN properties:

Entry

Meaning

ID

The property number (or ID) uniquely identifies the property. This number is evaluated internally by EPLAN. In the user settings, you can specify whether the property number is displayed in the program user interface.

Designation

The name of the property, which is displayed in the program's user interface.

Object classes

Specifies the objects for which the property is available.

Description

An explanatory text is displayed here for most of the properties.

Category

For display in the program, the properties are divided into different categories, that is, in groups of properties which can be displayed independently of one another.

Field type

The field type determines the permissible characters and the format provided for the property. Possible field types are, for example, "Boolean ( True / False)", "Decimal number", "Multilingual text".

Index (max.)

Specifies whether an index is possible for the property; in this case, the maximum possible index value is displayed. In the selection dialog, then, a plus sign is shown next to the property. If you click on that symbol, the list of possible indexed properties is expanded in the tree view, and you can select the desired property.

The index can be used to enable multiple display of a property, such as the display of multiple part numbers which are assigned to the same device. For the property "Part number" <20100>, the index "[3]" gives the third part number.

If a property has an index, then the index value "[0]" normally means that all values of the property are output; for example, all assigned part numbers. In the tree structure of the selection dialog, this corresponds to the level with the plus sign; if you select this, all the associated indexed properties will be selected together.

R/O

Specifies whether the property is read-only. "Yes" indicates a write-protected property; "no" means that you can edit the property. Depending on the field type of the property, you can then manually enter the values, select them from a list, or check a check box.

API define

The name under which the property is addressed through the API interface.
