Inserting Outer Dimensions

The Outer dimension function measures the real length of a wire harness segment (on bundles or cables). This segment is represented by two control points in the nailboard / cable drawing environment. Once the dimension is placed, you can move it anywhere by dragging the handler (black square). The outer dimension is available in both nailboard and cable drawing.

When placing outer dimensions in cable drawings, so-called "dimension points" become available. Dimension points are the outermost left and right points in symbols of cable ties, clips, labels, and special components. If the symbol is placed above the path (bundle, surface protection, cable, etc.), the outermost points are projected onto the path. As those symbols act as a control point in the cable drawing, the dimension point is available where the aforementioned part is placed onto the path.

  1. Select the Insert > Outer dimension menu items or the button on the toolbar.
  2. Select a control point by clicking.

This is the starting point for the dimension.
  3. Select another, neighboring control point by clicking; this second control point must be part of the same "sub-wire harness" as the first one.
  4. Click a third time to where you would like to have the dimension displayed, or determine the X and Y coordinates in the command bar.

The distance between the two control points is displayed outside the bundle / cable.
  5. Repeat the command by using the space bar or clicking the Place outer dimension button again, if desired.

Note:

In cases where there are multiple paths connecting the measured points, the dimension of the shortest path will be displayed. Wire or cable lengths stored in loops are ignored by outer dimensions.
