The torsional shear stress describes the shear stress occurring in the cable material because of a twist around the longitudinal axis and is used for the evaluation of the mechanical torsional stress capacity of the cable. In the case of trailing cables and wind energy lines the permissible torsional shear stress (typically 5-25 MPa) limits the twisting per meter to prevent fatigue fractures caused by repeated torsional cycles.
