Special Electrical Components

Special components consist of the following elements:

It is possible to create a 2D representation of the special component. It can then be used in the EPLAN Harness proD nailboard and cable drawing. The 2D window is not active by default, but you can add it via the Add 2D function from the Part menu or the button on the toolbar.

In the special component-specific properties you can determine the special component's characteristics including the pin settings. The following properties are available:

Property

Description

Special properties

Each special component has uniquely definable special properties:

  • Splice: Type of wire connection within the splice (Abutting or Overlapping property). If the splice is overlapping, the Embedded length can be specified.
  • Fuse: Time to respond and Rated current.
  • Light: Power consumption and Rated current.
  • Capacitor: Capacity and Max. voltage.
  • Resistor: Resistance and Power dissipation.

Required

This group box globally defines if a Cavity seal, Cavity plug, Wire terminal, Wire terminal on pin and / or Multiple seal is required for the special component placed within the EPLAN Harness proD workspace.

If the Wire terminal on pin is set as required, the first wire terminal from the list is placed on pins in the workspace / workdesk. If a wire is connected to a pin with a wire terminal, the wire terminal is automatically moved on the end of the wire. If the wire is rerouted elsewhere, the wire terminal moves back on the pin.

If the Multiple seal check box is activated, it is not possible to determine a pin as Sealed and add a cavity seal to an individual pin in the Detail pin settings section. If, in the Global pin settings section, you click to add a cavity seal, then you can add only a multiple seal.

Color

Color of the special component when it is placed in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace.

Sizes

The Size property defines the diameter of the special component's 3D representation in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace.
The Embedded length property can be defined for the overlapping special component type only. It defines the overlapping length of the wires.

Global pin settings

This section contains the settings which can be made generally for all the special component pins. They include the following properties:

Fixed extra length: The length necessary to connect a wire to a pin. When a wire is connected to a pin (in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace), this value is added to the wire length automatically.

Stripping length: The length of the wire segment which a pin requires to be stripped.

Preferred coating: The material of the thin metallic coating applied to the pin's base material.

Cavity plug: The cavity plug which should be attached to all unconnected pins. Click the [Add] button and select the desired part from the part navigator.

Cavity size: The diameter of the cavity where a cavity seal or cavity plug can be placed.

Wire terminals: A list of the required wire terminals. The suitable ones are selected automatically according to the connected wire's cross-section. Click the [Add] button and select another part from the part navigator. You can add any number of wire terminals.

Cavity seals: A list of the required cavity seals. The suitable ones are selected automatically according to the connected wire's outside diameter. Click the [Add] button and select another part from the part navigator. You can add any number of cavity seals.

Detail pin settings

This section contains the settings which can be made for each special component pin individually. The detail pin settings have priority over the global pin settings. They include the following properties:

Pins: The complete list of special component pins. Activating the check box in the first column enables individual settings for the pin.
The Full pin name property has the following format: Connection point designations.

The Connection point designations property is interconnected with the connection point designations in the 3D window. If you it here, it will be automatically updated in the 3D window and vice versa.

In the third column you can change the color of the pin in the 3D window and also simultaneously in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace environment.
The Fixed extra length entry determines the length necessary to connect a wire to a pin. When a wire is connected to a pin (in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace), this value is added to the wire length automatically.
The Stripping length entry determines the length of the wire segment which the pin requires to be stripped.
The Cavity size entry determines the diameter of the cavity where a cavity seal or cavity plug can be placed.
The Wire terminal req., Sealed and Cavity plug columns define whether a wire terminal, cavity seal, and / or cavity plug are required for the pin or not. Cavity plugs can be selected directly, for cavity seals and wire terminals there are special sections.
The Coating entry defines the thin metallic coating material applied to the pin's base material.
The Pin input entry is just an auxiliary option. It can be used to mark a pin as the input for a special component.

Note:

Pins can be added / removed via popup menu functions. The properties of several pins can be determined together using multiple selection.
