Transferring Piping Data

The data of a piping include the pipe class and the substance as well as the respective properties that have been specified for the pipe class and the substance in the segment template navigator. These data are called the piping data in their entirety.

The piping data can be displayed at the piping definition points, connection definition points, and in part also at the functions on a P&I diagram page. To this purpose various source objects such as the "piping definition point", "piping planning object", "pipe class", "substance", etc. are available for display in the property selection, depending on the object. The source objects "Pipe class" and / or "Substance" are then only available in the property selection if a pipe class and / or substance has been selected for the respective object.

Dependency of the transfer on the logic model

The data defined for a piping behave in a way analogous to the potentials and signals in electrical engineering. Accordingly, some functions for potentials and signals also apply to these process-engineering properties.

Thus, the set piping name, the pipe class and the substance is transferred across a function to other connections relative to the potential transfer set in the connection point logic.

On some functions, the With signal isolation check box is activated (e.g., for pumps, control valves, etc.) on the Symbol / function data tab. In analogy to the signals, a state on such a function is not transferred.

Transfer to the piping definition points

If you place a piping planning object as a piping definition point or assign it to a placed piping definition point, the piping data (pipe class, substance and the associated properties) are transferred to the respective piping definition point.

Entry of the data in the property dialogs

The pipe class and the other piping data can be stored via the corresponding properties at connections, connection definition points or in part also at functions. The entry of a substance is, for example, not possible at functions.

For the pipe class or the substance itself it is possible to branch to a selection dialog via the […] button and to select a pipe class or substance predefined as a template.

Note:

For reasons of uniformity we recommend that the pipe classes and substances not be entered at connections, connection definition points or functions, but only at piping definition points and piping planning objects. This allows you to define the piping data for the entire course of a piping in the P&I diagram.

If differences occur between the values in the property dialog and a selected pipe class template, the values in the property dialog are highlighted by a yellow background. Only those fields for which a value was entered at the pipe class template are highlighted by a yellow background color.

Through the selection of the pipe class in the property dialog the data of the pipe class are transferred from the segment template navigator to the connections or the placed objects in the P&I diagram. This removes the manual entries and the yellow color is no longer displayed.

Transfer to the connections

During the updating of connections the data determined by the piping definitions are transferred to the connections. These are, for example, the properties Piping name, Pipe class, Substance and - if they exist - the linked piping planning objects.

A pipe class entered at the connection has a higher priority than a pipe class at the connection definition point, and the connection definition point in turn has a higher priority than a piping definition point. If therefore a pipe class is set at the piping definition point, and a different pipe class is set at a connection definition point that is placed on the same piping / autoconnecting line, the pipe class of the connection definition point is assigned to the connection.

The check run message "005090" from the message class 005 "Connections" can be used to check whether there are other connections within a piping that have a pipe class which is different to the one entered at the piping definition.

Tip:

The connection properties cannot be displayed at the connection itself, but only at piping or connection definition points. If in the case of an extensive piping route the piping data can also be displayed at another position in the P&I diagram, you can insert an "empty" connection definition point on an autoconnecting line that belongs to the piping. The desired properties of the connection (for example the Pipe class) and / or the linked piping planning object (for example the Designation) can be displayed in the P&I diagram through the property selection on the Display tab. At the placement of the connection definition point on a defined piping the source object "Piping planning object" is available to you in addition to the source objects "Connection definition point" and "Connection" in the property selection.

Connection numbering

The pipings defined in the P&I diagram can also be taken into consideration at connection numbering. By means of the format element "Piping data" in the Connection numbering: Formats dialog you can, for example, designate the connection sections of the pipings in the P&I diagram with a piping number. the piping name, etc.

Updating the piping data and transfer to the functions

You can transfer the piping data (pipe class, substance, etc.) modified at the piping planning object to the linked piping definition points in the P&I diagram by using the popup menu item Update detailed planning in the pre-planning navigator. Existing piping data are deleted in the process.

If a pipe class and / or a substance is not entered at any of the piping definition points linked to a piping planning object, the pipe class and / or the substance is only transferred to the graphically first piping definition point during the execution of this popup menu item.

When the detailed planning is updated, the piping data from one piping planning object are also transferred to the functions / devices in a piping in the P&I diagram.

Even if you define pipings in the P&I diagram without pre-planning, meaning without linked piping planning object, it may be necessary to transfer the modified piping data (for example a different pipe class) of the piping definition point to the associated connections and functions. To do so, mark the piping definition point in the piping navigator and select the popup menu item Update piping.
