Individual Words, Sentences, Placeholders in Keywords

Individual words, individual sentences, several sentences and keywords with placeholders are permitted as keywords in the dictionary.

Whether an end of sentence character (period ".", exclamation mark "!" or question mark "?") may be positioned at the end of a keyword, depends on the user setting Remove end of sentence character. We recommend leaving this setting activated in order to avoid multiple keywords that only differ in the end of sentence character. If an end of sentence character is then found during the translation at the end of the text to be translated, EPLAN searches for a keyword without this character in the dictionary.

Individual words

Individual words are keywords consisting of only one word. A keyword that you enter in a source language as an individual word may be a sentence in the translated text for another language.

Sentences

A sentence consists of at least two individual words separated by a space or a punctuation mark. This means that a term composed of two single words is managed as a sentence.

A keyword that you enter in a source language as a sentence may be an individual word in the translated text for another language.

Segmentation type

With the segmentation type you specify whether the texts to be translated are to be translated word by word, sentence by sentence or as an entire entry. The type of segmentation also determines when a punctuation mark is interpreted as the end of a sentence. You specify the segmentation type in the Project-specific translation settings and in the User-specific translation settings in the Segment field.

End of sentence character

The punctuation marks . (period), ! (exclamation mark), and ? (question mark) can occur at the end of words and sentences in the texts to be translated. When translating sentences, the end of the sentence is recognized when a full stop, an exclamation mark, or a question mark is followed by a space or line break.

When you export a Missing-word list, you can recognize which keywords are required in the dictionary for the translation.

Entire entry

The entire entry is the entire content of a text field. This content can consist of a single word, a single sentence or several sentences.

Example:

If the "Entire entry" segmentation is used, EPLAN interprets only the last punctuation mark of the complete entry as an end of sentence character. If the user setting Remove end of sentence character is activated, the keywords shown in the "Keywords" column must be available in the dictionary so that the text can be translated.

Keywords with placeholders

Text entries on project pages often have the same text with different numbers, e.g.:

PE terminal, 2 targets
PE terminal, 4 targets

You can enter keywords with placeholders for these text entries into the dictionary. These keywords consist of one fixed and one dynamic element. The fixed element is translated. The dynamic element is entered into the dictionary using the placeholder character % and a number, e.g., %0 or %3. The dynamic element is filled with numeric values during translation.

A keyword can contain up to 100 placeholders: %0 ... %99.

Keywords with placeholders can also be used for texts at which one component is always the same and is translated while the other component varies and is identified as "not to be translated", for example:

Emergency-stop switch +A

This identification for multilingual texts is effected in the respective field by means of the popup menu item Mark text as 'Excluded from translation'. A corresponding keyword with placeholder characters (for example "Emergency-stop switch %0") has to exist in the dictionary so that a translation can be effected irrespective of the Segment translation setting.
