The Replace function is used to replace objects with others of the same type. All part types available in EPLAN Harness proD Library may be replaced (i.e. connectable objects, wires, splices, cables, leading parts, clips, grommets, parts, connectable object housings, backshells, etc.). Multiple parts of the same type can be replaced at once; if, e.g., multiple wires are selected, they can be all replaced by another wire.

1. Select the object which you would like to replace.
2. Select the Edit > Replace menu items or the button.
   
   The Part navigator dialog is opened.
3. Select the desired part and click [OK].
   
   The Part navigator dialog is closed.
   
   The original object is replaced by the one you selected.

Replacement rules for cables

The following rules apply to cable replacement:

• A cable may be replaced by a cable.
• A ribbon cable may be replaced by a ribbon cable.
• A cable may not be replaced by a ribbon cable or vice versa.
• The new cable must have wires of the same names as the active wires of the original cable.
• The Replace command checks the names of the active cable wires only. It does not check the names of deactivated cable wires.
• If the new cable has more wires than the existing one, only the cable wires with matching names are connected. Other wires become deactivated and are not connected. Those wires can be activated later.
• Shape, length, and control points of the corresponding cable layers (cable wires, top cable layer - insulator, shield, etc.) are retained.

Replacement rules for connectable objects

The following rules apply to connector, terminal, connectable object, relay, contactor, sensor, switch, pushbutton, and signal device replacement:

• Connectable objects can be replaced by any connectable object or wire terminal.
• Full pin names must match. Wires are connected to a pin with matching full pin name.
• Connectable objects with pins may be replaced by connectable objects with grouped pins and vice versa as long as only wires and no cable layers (shield, insulator, etc.) are connected to the grouped pin.
• If a cable layer ends on a grouped pin, the connectable object may be replaced only by a connectable object with a grouped pin.
• A connectable object with a ribbon grouped pin may be replaced by a connectable object with a ribbon grouped pin only.
• A connectable object with a ribbon grouped inline pin may be replaced by a connectable object with a ribbon grouped inline pin only.
• The ribbon grouped inline pin of the new connectable object does not have to have the same name as the original one.
• If wires are connected to pins, the new connectable object must have pins with the same names as the original ones.
• The (ribbon) grouped pin of a new connectable object does not have to have the same name as the original one.

Replacement rules for leading parts

The following rules apply to leading part replacement:

• Leading parts may be replaced by leading parts only.
• Clips may be replaced by clips only.
• Grommets may be replaced by grommets only.
• If nothing is routed through a leading part / grommet, the names of the end points of the leading path of the new leading part / grommet do not have to match.
• If nothing is routed through a leading part / grommet, the end points of the new leading part / grommet do not have to be interconnected in the same way.
• If nothing is routed through a clip, the name of the clip point of the new clip does not have to match.
• If a path is routed through the end points of a leading part / grommet, the names of the end points of the new leading part / grommet must match.
• If a path is routed through a leading part / grommet, the end points of the new leading part / grommet must be interconnected in the same way.
• If a path is routed through the clip point of a clip, the name of the clip point of the new clip must match.

Replacement rules for special components

The following rules apply to splice, fuse, light, capacitor, and resistor replacement:

• A special component can be replaced by another special component.
• If a wire is connected to a splice pin, the pin of the new splice must have the same name as the original one.
• Full pin names must match. Wires are connected to a pin with matching full pin name.
