Dialog call:You have opened a project.
- You have selected terminals in the graphical editor, the terminal strip navigator, or in the device navigator. You have selected pages or a project in the page navigator. Tab Devices > Command group Terminals > Number.
- You have selected terminals in the graphical editor or in the Terminal strips navigator. Tab Devices > Command group Terminals > Terminal strip. Select one or more terminals. Select the Number terminals popup menu item.
- You have selected pins in the graphical editor, the plug navigator, or in the device navigator. You have selected pages or a project in the page navigator. Tab Devices > Command group Plugs > Number.
- You have selected pins in the graphical editor or in the plug navigator. Tab Devices > Command group Plugs > Plugs. Select one or more pins. Select the Number pins popup menu item.
In this dialog you specify the settings for the terminal designations or pin designations. When numbering terminals the Number terminals dialog will open, and when numbering pins the Number pins dialog will open. All terminals / pins are given a unique designation, which can consist of alphanumeric or just numeric elements.
Overview of the main dialog elements:
You can choose the numbering scheme from this drop-down list.
Click [...] to open the dialog Settings: Numbering dialog. In this dialog, you can edit an existing scheme or create a new scheme.
Use the drop-down list to define the sequence for numbering:
- Like sorting: The terminal / pin sorting sequence displayed in the Terminal strips - <Project name> or Plugs - <Project name> dialog is used. Select this option if you would like to number existing terminals / pins but retain the existing numbering sequence.
- Page-based: The terminals / pins will be numbered by page in the sequence they are reported. The sequence of the reports is defined in the plot frame. For example projects according to the IEC standard are numbered by column, whereas projects according to the NFPA standard are numbered by row.
- Cable-based: The terminals / pins are numbered in the sequence of the placed cable connections.
- Level-based: The terminals are numbered by level. The assignment of the multi-level terminals remains the same. This setting is only available for terminals.
- Page-based (as an alternative to orientation of plot frame): The terminals / pins are numbered by pages, whereby the sequence is an alternative to the reporting direction of the plot frame. For example projects according to the IEC standard are numbered by row and projects according to the NFPA standard are numbered by column.
Use the drop-down list to define the scope of numbering:
- Selected: Only the selected terminals or pins are numbered.
- All of the selected terminal strips / plugs: All terminals of the selected terminal strip, or all pins of the selected plug are numbered.
- All of all terminal strips / plugs: The terminals of all terminal strips in the project, or the pins of all plugs in the project are numbered.
Group box Numeric settings
Here you enter the start value for numbering terminals / pins.
Here you enter the increment between each terminal / pin. If, for example, the increment "5" is specified, the terminals / pins will automatically be numbered 1, 6, 11, etc.
The number of places is determined from the online numbering format (File > Settings > Projects > "Project name" > Device > Numbering (online)).
The prefix comes before the numbering, the suffix comes after the numbering. Enter the appropriate characters here.
Group box Non-floating terminals / pins
PE terminals / pins ... SH terminals / pins:
In these fields you specify the numbering settings for PE / PEN, N, and SH terminals or pins. Settings are specified separately for the potential types PE / PEN, N and SH. The following options are available:
- Do not modify: All terminals or pins with at least one connection point set to potential type "PE", "PEN", "N", or "SH" will be ignored during numbering.
- Number: All PE, PEN, N or SH terminals or pins are numbered.
- Do not modify, include in sequence: This setting is only available for terminals. PE, PEN, N or SH terminals are not modified during numbering but are taken into account when numbering the other terminals. This means that the designations of the other terminals are assigned as though the PE, PEN, N or SH terminals were being included in the numbering.
In this example, four general terminals and one PE / PEN terminal are being numbered. The terminals receive different designations after numbering depending on the setting in the PE terminals / pins field:

Use the drop-down list to specify how multiple terminals should be numbered:
- Do not modify: Terminals with the property Allow same designations are ignored during numbering.
- Number same: Terminals with the same designation with the property Allow same designations are given the same number.
- Number individually: Terminals with the property Allow same designations are each given their own number. Therefore, multiple terminals which had the same number before numbering will have different numbers after numbering.
Tip:
If multiple terminals have different preceding signs (e.g., 1, +1, -1) and you would like to give them the same number, select the "Keep alphabetical elements" option in the Terminals with alphabetical characters field.
Terminals with alphabetical characters:
Use the drop-down list to specify how terminals or pins with alphabetical elements in the designation should be numbered. The designation has alphabetical elements, if itb does not consist exclusively of numbers.
- Do not modify: Terminals or pins with alphabetical elements in the designation are ignored during numbering.
- Keep alphabetical elements: The alphabetical elements of the terminal or pin designation are retained. If the designation only has alphabetical elements, the old designation is attached to the new numbering. Sequential terminals with different counters but the same numerical component receive the same numerical component in the counter even after the numbering.
- Number: All terminals / pins are renumbered. In doing so, the old designation is overwritten.
In this example, two general terminals and one PE / PEN terminal are being numbered. The terminals receive different designations after numbering depending on the setting in the Terminals with alphabetical characters field:

If this check box is activated, the sorting and thus the sequence of the terminals / pins within the terminal strip / plug can change during numbering, if the sort code of the terminals / pins is empty. Manually entered sort codes remain unchanged and are taken into consideration in the numbering sequence.
If the check box is deactivated, the sorting and thus the sequence of the terminals / pins within the terminal strip / plug is retained during numbering. To this purpose terminals / pins with an empty sort code automatically have a sort code assigned before numbering. Manually entered sort codes remain unchanged and are taken into consideration in the numbering sequence. The existing terminal / pin designation is used as the automatically determined sort code.
If this check box is activated, only those terminals / pins whose designations begin with a "?" or whose designations are empty will be numbered.
This check box is available if the Only number marked ones option is activated.
If this check box is activated, existing designations within the terminal strip / plug are taken into consideration during numbering. Starting from the start value the first free designation is assigned to the first terminal (or first pin) marked with a "?". Subsequently, numbering is continued using the specified increment, with existing designations being skipped.
If the check box is deactivated, the existing designations are not taken into account during numbering. In this case multiple designations within the terminal strip / plug can occur.
Note:
If you number terminals in accordance with the "Device definition" or "Initiators" scheme, it is possible that all the terminal designations of the device or initiator are already being used. In this case the terminals for which no free designation is found are not numbered.
In this example eight general terminals are numbered, with the Only number marked ones option being activated. The start value and the increment are set to the value "1".
