Creating Extrusions

An extrusion is a 3D polygon. To create an extrusion, you can use the mouse and the keyboard. Both techniques can be combined.

Note:

When placing objects, you can choose to place them freely, on a key point, anywhere on a particular surface, or anywhere on a particular plane. You can also combine these options, e.g. you can choose to place an object on a particular plane and then on a particular key point on that plane. Just use the corresponding button or shortcut. See Construction aids for details.

Using the mouse

  1. Click the Create extrusion button on the toolbar.
  2. Determine the first point of the extrusion by clicking on the desired location in the 3D working window.
  3. Determine the second point (the first segment of the extrusion) and the other points (other segments) in the same way.
  4. Right-click when you are satisfied with the shape of the base of the extrusion.

The 2D shape of the base of the extrusion is closed and completed.
  5. Determine the orientation and height of the extrusion and click to complete it.
  6. Repeat the command by using the space bar or clicking the Create extrusion button again, if desired.

Using command bar and mouse

  1. Click the Create extrusion button on the toolbar.
  2. Determine the X and Y (and Z) coordinates of the first point in the command bar and confirm with [OK].
  3. Determine the second point (the first segment of the extrusion) in the same way or switch to the Distance command in the command bar and determine the Length value of the first segment.
  4. Determine the other points in the same way. Use the mouse to determine the orientation of the lines if you are using the Distance command.
  5. Click [Finish] or right-click when you are satisfied with the shape of the 2D base.
  6. Determine the height of the object by typing a value, then determine the orientation with the mouse, and click to finish the extrusion.
  7. Repeat the command by using the space bar or clicking the Create extrusion button again, if desired.

Properties

Existing extrusions can be edited in the properties panel. The properties common to all 3D objects are described in the 3D Object Properties section of this help file.
