Placing Special Components

Special components consist of splices , fuses , lights , capacitors and resistors .

Special components can be placed on bundles and their derivatives (wires and surface protections). They can also be placed freely in the working window and be used later, usually with the Merge control points command.

Special components can be removed from a bundle by right-clicking on the component and selecting the Remove special component from bundle popup menu item or by selecting the same function from the Tools menu. By subsequently clicking on a location in the working window, the special component will be moved to that position, and only a control point is left on the bundle.

Special components are displayed with the size which was defined for them in Library. If, however, the bundle below the special component increases in size, the special component is also displayed larger so that it can still be seen.

To define the relation between special component and wires, use the Special components editor. It can be accessed in the Properties panel under the Connections option.

  1. Select the Insert > Place special component menu items and select the desired special component.

    Note:

Specifically for splices it is also possible to use the button on the toolbar. For rapid prototype splices use the button or the Rapid prototyping > Place splice menu items.

The Part navigator dialog is opened.
  2. Select the desired special component and click [OK].
Or, in the case of rapid prototype splice placement, confirm the rapid prototype splice properties.

The Part navigator dialog is closed.
  3. Select a location on a bundle or a wire and place the special component by clicking. Or, if you want to place the special component freely and use it later, simply click on a location in the working window.
  4. Repeat the command by using the space bar or clicking the Place special component button again and selecting the special component, if desired.

Place special component in workdesk with specified distance from control point or special component

A special component can be placed in the workdesk with a specified distance from an existing control point or special component. In case the special component is placed on a cable control point, it can only be placed on the particular cable layer on which the existing control point is located.

If the special component is placed on a bundle control point, it can only be placed on the particular bundle segment on which the existing control point is located. The boundaries of the bundle segment are confined by the bundle's start / end control points (i.e. the control points where the bundle starts / ends or divides the bundle and the wire / cable / surface protection / other bundle) or split point (i.e. the control point where the bundle is branched).

In case the special component is placed on a ribbon cable control point, the special component can be placed either on the ribbon cable or its branch if the ribbon cable is branched.

  1. Select the Insert > Place special component and select the desired special component.

  3. Left-click on the control point of a wire, cable, bundle, surface protection, etc. to place the special component.
  4. Select the direction of the special component placement (either side of the control point path).
  5. Enter the Distance value into the command bar and press [Enter].
