Wires

A wire provides electrical connectivity between pins. Typically it has a core of drawn or rolled metal whose length exceeds its diameter.

In the wire-specific properties you can determine the wire's characteristics. The following properties are available:

Property

Description

Cross-section (CSA / AWG)

Mandatory property. "Metal" cross-section of the wire, usually in [mm²] or [AWG]. In AWG, a single value is displayed if the metric value is within a range of 5% of the converted AWG value. If the converted AWG value exceeds 5%, a range of values is displayed.

AWG

Wire diameter specification ("American Wire Gauge", originally called Brown & Sharpe Gauge). A system of numerical wire sizes starting with the lowest numbers of the largest sizes. Gauge sizes are each 20.6% apart based on the cross-sectional area. The lower the AWG number, the larger the wire diameter.

Note:

If the cross-section is determined in some square measurement unit, AWG is filled automatically.

With insulation

If activated, an insulation is determined for the wire, and the outside diameter must be entered manually. If unchecked, the outside diameter is calculated automatically.

Outside diameter

Mandatory property. Outside diameter of the wire including insulation.

Min. bending radius

Minimally permitted radius of bending according to the data sheet of the wire used.

Note:

It is determined in multiples of the Outside diameter value.

Max. resistance

Maximally permitted electrical resistance a wire can have.

Max. voltage

Maximally permitted voltage for safe operation.

Max. current

Maximally permitted current for safe operation.

Electrical class

A wire classification (any user-defined classification like "high voltage", "data", "control", etc.) can be entered here. This value will be used as default for the wire occurrence field in the workspace and can later be changed. It can prevent e.g. high- and low-voltage wires from being routed in one bundle. Such a conflict can be easily recognized in the workspace's Tasks list.

Material code

Short form for a material (e.g. POLYVINYL CHLORIDE = PVC).

Strands

A stranded wire which does not provide electrical connectivity. It serves to increase the cable's mechanical resistance (especially the pull-off force).

Color

Color of the wire when it is placed in the EPLAN Harness proD workspace.

Stripe color

Stripe color of the wire.

Imprint

A printed number or a combination of characters and numbers which are printed on a wire for identification.
